The U.S. Consulate General in Guangzhou will soon move to a new and spacious facility in the Zhujiang New Town neighborhood. During our move it will be necessary to suspend temporarily our usual passport, extra pages, consular report of birth, and notary services. From July 15 through July 22, appointments and passport pick up will not be available.

 

We encourage U.S. citizens in south China to check family members? passports and to schedule appointments now if necessary in order to avoid inconvenience or disruption to summer travel plans.

It's not clear if the entire Consulate is moving at that time - I don't see anything about it (the move) on their web site

The state-of-the-art compound will consist of seven buildings including a main chancery building, a consular building, a warehouse with maintenance shops, a utility building, a Marine Security Guard quarters, and two compound access control facilities.

 

The centerpiece of the compound will be the four-story Consular office building featuring an interior “Great Hall” and 67 service windows for American citizen services, visa interviews and other applicants. The stone-clad building will be flooded with natural light and the Great Hall will feature natural wood wall and ceiling finishes as well as a Chinese granite floor.

Found it on Google Maps - this is actually one block west (across the Line 3 subway/Huaxia Ave.) from where I drew the shaded area

But, but, but....what about Mr. and Mrs. Yang???? Are they moving too?

 

And, what about that familiar sewer smell that lingers around the old consulate...will the new one that looks like an old fashioned computer monitor have it too? Oh, disregard...it's Guangzhou, and it is the American consulate filled with US State Department workers.... I know the answer already.

 

Thanks for the info Randy. Good luck to any and all who have to go to the computer monitor. I can see the line out front, now. No nice air conditioned quonset hut out front to shelter the awaitees.

Incredible...beautiful building and sculpture, but for a Consulate? I reckon I'd have to visit it to make a fair judgment.

An adoption service got this message around the same time

 

 

The following is a message our staff received on June 4 from the U.S. Consulate General in Guangzhou:

The U.S. Consulate General will soon move to new premises currently nearing completion in the Zhujiang New Town area of Guangzhou. This spacious and modern facility will house all of our operations, including consular services for visa applicants and for U.S. citizens. We currently expect to suspend operations on July 15 and to resume consular services by appointment on July 24.

 

In order to complete timely processing of current cases and ensure a smooth resumption of services, the Adopted Children’s Immigrant Visa Unit will maintain the following schedule of services:

• July 5—Last day for LSC submissions until resumption of services. All LSCs submitted by this date will be returned on July 12.
• July 11—Last day for adopted children’s immigrant visa interviews until resumption of services.
• July 12—Last day to pick up issued visas, Article 5 packets, and other processed documents until resumption of services.
• July 24—Services resume at new facility.

I never had the pleasure of visiting the current location of the consulate. Way back in our days, the facilities were on Shamian Island, just down the street from the White Swan Hotel.

Still no general announcement about the move - only the ACS and Adoption Units have announced their schedules. The Visa interview appointments have opened up only through July 12, the last I've heard.

 

Still just a guess that they're moving the old kit'n'kaboodle that week - maybe no general announcement out of security concerns.
