Crazy Day in Myrtle Beach...

In Myrtle Beach yesterday we got approached by a sales rep for one of those vacation time share companies, said if we visit their sales office we would get some incentives for checking out one of their resorts, and breakfast, so we did their tour this morning, very nice places but not something we would invest in at this time.

What was really cool about this sales call, was the salesman we were matched up with. This guy was a large guy and can be called a celebrity, he was a heavy weight professional boxer from the 80's James "Bone Crusher" Smith, a very gentle giant of a man. Fact about James Smith, he fought Mike Tyson and lasted 12 rounds in Las Vegas 1987. Was a pleasure meeting him.

After that adventure, we visited with some Chinese friends who are setting up a Massage business in Myrtle Beach. We decided to get a late lunch together, and tried a Japanese place, but they were closed, so we went to a Texas Steak house next to the place, this was an experience I have never had, taking three Chinese people into a place like this, the food was good for a western person like me, however for Chinese it was an taste sensation that was interesting to watch, my wife ordered a grilled salmon, our friends ordered chopped steaks, it was a truly new experience for a couple who eat Chinese all the time. My wife started laughing watching the expressions on their faces, she knew full well that they were not liking anything, one friend nearly emptied a full bottle of hot sauce eating lunch trying to mask the taste of the chopped steaks.

Wow!!! I remember Bone Crusher quite well. And I also recall that fight with Tyson. Although not a boxing fan, I am a sports writer and, working for the Miami Herald back in the 80's, I often manned the "wire," which was slang for the overnight sports ticker that brought in scores from the West Coast (my job in spring and summer included writing blurbs on games involving the Dodgers, Angels, Padres, Giants, Athletics, and Mariners). I also had to log in other stuff for the boxing guys and I remember that bout's results coming in from Vegas. Our main boxing writer at the time was stunned that Bone Crusher had lasted so long.
