Is it best to go ahead and get a re-entry permit for travel though the length of stay will be less than a year? Maybe it best shows that the person doesn't plan to abandon his/her immigration status or leave the country for good...and it is better to have the re-entry permit? Thank you

Good idea if travel for more than 6 months, but not a requirement unless more than 1 year.

 

Also note if out of USA more than 6 months this will affect when can apply for Citizenship.
