from China stopping in Canada then on to the US

Recommended Posts

Transferring through Canada is not a problem for US Citizens and US Green-card Holders. HOWEVER can be a problem for first time immigrants if transit through Canada takes more than 24 hours, also restricted to specific flights, Canadian airports and airlines, cannot visit Canada without Canadian visa...

Visa required, except for Nationals of China (People's Rep.) holding confirmed onward tickets transiting on the same calendar day (SEE NOTE 43594) (SEE NOTE 43595) and:
  • holding a valid US visa (SEE NOTE 39687); and
  • traveling on a direct flight from Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Manila or Taipei and connecting on a flight to the USA;

Oh, One more note, Canada is Unique in a way, the airport in Canada IS a US Preclearance POE location, you will clear US Customs in Canada before boarding onward flight to the USA, so if on an immigrant visa, this should be where the immigrations envelope should be turned in, flight from Canada to the USA is treated as a domestic flight.

A few years ago a Chinese woman I know here in Portland went to China on AP before getting her green card. On her return flight she had a stop in Vancouver BC. They wouldn't let her board the plane in Hong Kong because she didn't have a green card or a transit visa.
