I imagine the western style hotels that cater to foreigners will take credit cards but you will pay more than you would for a room your MM can get you. I let Bing handle all that stuff and she got me nice rooms for a great price. Good to take the card, bad to count on it.

Some of the larger stores, as in department type stores, will take a credit card, but I'm with Carl on this one. Cash is king.

Yes, most of the larger store in Beiijing will take credit card. But for an example, the hotel that I stayed at when I was there long time ago, they took credit card, but the restruant and the bar there did not.

 

Right now my wife has 2 of my credit cards, one she uses to get cash advance every month for her rent, and the other for small things, and even in GZ, large city, a lot of the larger stores do not even take credit cards, and the ones that do, yes higher prices. But I did find that in GZ, with cash, it gives you room to haggle better price in the stores.
