An article on China's youth

Recommended Posts

Maybe this should be moved to the Culture & Language Discussion room or even in the Zhao Ziyang thread. It has a really good Reuters video about Zhao Ziyang and the newly released book detailing his memoirs. Check out the video.

Just a suggestion.

Good article.

"They are not told how communist authorities finally silenced the dissent with deadly force, killing hundreds." But Red Cross said thousands.

"The Yangtse Evening Post reported earlier this month that in the relatively affluent eastern province of Jiangsu, 46 university graduates had applied for jobs as public toilet attendants, such was the state of the labor market.

"Better to be a 'toilet master' than unemployed at home," it cited one of the applicants as saying."

As with most news stories, there is always more to it, than what the writer wishes to emphasize. Still, this quote tells a lot about the current climate in China regarding young people and Western idealism:

"The students became very disillusioned with the West, especially with the bombing of the Chinese embassy in Belgrade," said Bo Zhiyue, a Chinese politics expert at the National University of Singapore's East Asian Institute.

"They learned that the West was trying to 'get' China whether or not China was going to have democracy," he added. For Li, the history student, questions about the sensitive events of 1989 are met with blank looks.

"I don't know much about that period," he mumbles.

There is a reason for this; it's not the sort of topic you would want to bring up as a Westerner in the company of Chinese people. It's a topic best left to the people of China and their Children to discuss, if they are inclined to do so; and free from this assistance of outsiders.

A good lesson for all of us .... "Better to be a 'toilet master' than unemployed at home," it cited one of the applicants as saying."
