A Little Help

This guy in Guangzhou was crying out for help and got it in an unexpected way. Be careful what you wish for.

It's an interesting story for sure. There are two groups out there: 1, those who feel sorry and want to help the guy, and 2, those who are pissed about the disruption it causes and want that sort of thing to end. Perhaps the jumpers will start finding a new place to get attention now:

I pushed him off because jumpers like Chen are very selfish," the newspaper quoted Mr Lai as saying.

"Their action violates a lot of public interests. They do not really dare to kill themselves. Instead, they just want to raise the relevant government authorities' attention to their appeals."

Mr Chen is said to have suffered spine and elbow injuries and is recovering in a Guangzhou hospital.

The bridge has gained a macabre reputation, attracting at least 12 would-be suicide jumpers since the start of April, according to the China Daily report. None of the 12 has jumped, although each has held up traffic for several hours, it said.

About 7 years ago, I was in GZ when a guy did a swan dive off of one of the higher buildings downtown in the business district at rush hour. The mess he made delayed traffic in several directions for hours. I was on a light bus at the time, and after the first 30 minutes of delay, the mood onboard changed from one of general sympathy, to one of grave humor, and on to contempt.

The problem is that in China's big cities, there are just so many people, and tens, or hundreds of thousands of lives can be affected by one person's actions in such a way. If spectacular, disruptive suicides becomes a regular event, it adds to the already pervasive rush hour grid-lock. Callous, of course, but logical in a way.

Reminds me of the scene in "Lethal Weapon" where Riggs (Mel Gibson) handcuffs himself to a jumper and jumps off a building with the jumper.
