Jesse your range of experience in China is with the people who ride the subway, chat on their cell phones, and work in offices...There is a much larger China out there...

What is this, your overused trump card again Roger? You're simply wrong on this one, as you are in other posts that represent the same support for a socialistic world.

Jesse, your body may live in China but it's a fantasy world your mind inhabits. If you think your tiny tiny slice of life in China is at all representative of the whole country, you're delusional. You've had direct contact with what, maybe a few hundred people or even a thousand in your time there? Roger summed up your level of contact with the populace pretty well I think.

Here's some numbers to put it in better perspective for you: 1.3 billion!! 3.7 million!! That's the number of people and the size in sq. miles. You haven't and never will come close to seeing or visiting anywhere close to all those people or that territory.

Yet you come on here and make statements based on what you consider to be your VAST experience about how everything's so peachy and how everyone's so happy and how any mention of protests or suppression is so wrong because you're there and you know different. What a crock of s**t!

I saw on the Olympic telecast that the sky was pretty blue in China for a few days. I wonder...what color is the sky in YOUR world?

hey. anyone of you is thinking of helping those poor in china more than marry your wife while making so much remark? :D

One of the beauties of this country is people get to express their opinion without having to monetarily compensate anyone for it. ;)

You may not like those opinions but we get to express them nonetheless. Many will hilite the positive aspects of China, of which there are too many to list. But some touch on the negatives aspects which, whether one chooses to believe it or not, actually exist.

Whether I choose to spend my money on the poor in China, on the poor in Darfur, on bringing my wife here or on a night at Red Lobster is,frankly, my business.

I don't feel obligated to pay for the opportunity to express my opinions just because someone doesn't like them.

I'm very impressed that you were able to respond to Wendy's remark Dave... :D But I'm not at all sure that you have her meaning right... Perhaps she will return with a further clarification... :)

 Nevermind.. Maybe Dave is just upset because he fell asleep readin' the Star Bucks novel on which Wal-Mart to take the car to, to get the tire changed, and his cheese sammich fell out of his hand onto the floor

Hmmm...Sammich seems like an odd Americanism for a nice Chinese girl like you to have picked up.

Anyway. Not upset. Just tellin it like it is. ;) Don't go to Starbucks or Wal-Mart. I change my own tires. Don't eat cheese sandwiches. Oh for five. Otherwise you're right on. ;)

Do you wish to clarify your meaning, as Rog suggests, or did I have it about right? I mean you did say it twice so did I get it wrong both times?

I just say it... I didn't mean any serious. Don't be so serious :o

I'll keep that in mind. :) But remember, if you call people out don't be too surprised if they answer. ;)

Dave, you no more know about my background and experience than Roger. And anyone that is truly interested in finding out, should take the time to call me for a little chat. :bop:

Back to the topic at hand, which is Roger's belief that there is going to be an EXPLOSION in China over the very real wide gaps in the social classes in China.

I suggest that you (or Roger) will more likely see an explosion at your local Wal-Mart in the US customer service counter than you will in China. This ain't America over here and my mind and body are still functioning well enough to be able to separate my personal opinion from the personal thoughts and opinions of the people in my life here today; no, their not all rich subway riders and cell phone talkers either.

And what's this about delusions? The only delusion I see happening in this thread it that China is boiling over with a bunch of pissed off people because of inequality. Again, this ain't the US. When I express a thought, it isn't coming from my very limited personal experience, but rather from the many conversations I've had with the people that live here. These people include my wife, daughter and her very large circle of family and friends. It's interesting what you can discover from the people that live here when you just take a moment to ask them a question. Most are more than ready to tell you what's on their mind. Kinda like this twisted place.

Your attempt to paint me as walking about with some sort of pollyanna view of life and the world doesn't jive with anything I've said in this thread or others.

Not every person in China has been thrilled and awed by the Olympics as we have here on Candle. Many rural Chinese see no benefit to themselves or their villages as the major cities and their residents grow increasingly rich while they continue to fall behind...200 million rural people earn less than $1.25/day... :bop:

http://network.nationalpost.com/np/blogs/f...s-cheering.aspx

from the article

And as their lives become harder, and they see officials and urban-dwellers helping themselves, many rural residents fight back. China¡¯s own security forces say that there are 50,000 annual demonstrations against the government in the country, and most experts believe that the vast majority now occur in rural areas. Some angry farmers travelled to Beijing, where they set up an entire ¡°village¡± in an outlying suburb that they use as a base to launch protests near the Communist Party¡¯s headquarters. ¡°Eventually, this could explode somewhere into a much larger, more violent movement,¡± Li Datong, a prominent Chinese political writer, told me in Beijing.

So "Roger's belief that there is going to be an EXPLOSION in China" is actually a direct quote from a prominent Chinese political writer, and not Roger's belief at all.

The article also states "But nearly all of the media have been unanimous on one positive point: Average Chinese citizens are immensely proud of these Olympics."

So WHO is being negative about WHAT here ??

Do you have a quote from me where I said something about someone being negative here? Not in this thread you don't. Roger posted the article and also agrees with it's content. I don't see the author here to debate the content, so I guess the debate defaults to the rest of you that think it represents truth.

The question was "Who is being negative about what?"

This topic is too wrapped around nothing to really answer anything.

No, no, no Randy. Actually, Roger opened a thread with the title:

""This Could Explode Somewhere..."

Then Roger went on to comment about the content of the article. This isn't a topic about being negative, even though some of you are experts at that. It's a topic about how the author of the article and those that agree with the content believe that China is going to explode because of the large separation in lifestyle class.

I call it hogwash.

There are a number of other threads that address those that seemingly have nothing better to do than mimick Debbie Downer. Remember her from the Saturday Night Live skit?

Nothing in life, be it the US, China, or wherever is perfect. Some of you just can't stand it when things go well....

It wasn't Roger - he used quotes (" ") around "this could explode somewhere"

There you go again Randy.

For your information, Roger opened the topic and personally typed the title to it. You can see the title to the topic can't you?

So, again, I restate that Roger opened the topic citing an article and commented on its content. It's not hard for a reasonable person to see how the topic evolved into something that has nothing to do with his original post; and again, the content of the article about the people of China facing an impending civil explosion is based solely on Roger's conjecture and the authors conjecture.

China is no more ready to explode than your underwear; unless of course you loaded them this morning...

Yes - and I see the quotes around it, and the exact words in the article, attributed to "Li Datong, a prominent Chinese political writer". All words from the OP are copied directly from the article.

So?? :D

What's your point? That you and Roger disagree with the content of the article? Or would you prefer taking a more non-committal posture and profess yourself just to be a poster of information without an opinion?

Of course we know that Roger has an opinion on this topic. Have a look:

Revenue from the Olympics??? Jesse no country ever makes money by hosting the Olympics...China is spending $30 BILLION DOLLARS to showcase their country to the world...Only the star athletes end up with gold... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/cool.gif)

No what I'm saying is that the situation in rural China is a powderkeg of inequalities and injustices and who knows when, where and if there will be a spark... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif)
