griz326
I bought 8 lessons of Pimsleur for Mandarin speakers and transferred them to MP3 players for my gal and her daughter. There is plenty of room on the MP3 players. Are there any other audio teaching programs I could add to the MP3 players before I give them to them?I've got about 3 weeks to get the programs them and copy them to the MP3 players. Link to comment
dnoblett
Rosetta stone has one, not targeted specifically at mandarin speakers, but should be very useful after doing the Pimseleur course. http://www.rosettastone.com/personal/langu...nglish-american Link to comment
griz326
I just bought Rosetta Stone for me to use with my audio training programs. I have all of the Pimsleur Mandarin Chinese courses, the FSI Chinese training, a few Chinesepod sessions and all of Yong Ho. I'd certainly like to have more than 8 lessons for my gals since I have so many audio training programs that I should already be fluent! What I am hoping to find are additional audios for the girls listening on the plane. Edited June 9, 2008 by griz326 (see edit history) Link to comment
shadeOgray
Try Fluenz Mandarin, haven't seen anything better yet. Kicks the crap out of Rosetta and Pims. in my opinion Link to comment
Guest WenDylan
I've got an excellent text book, not only is it exceptional at teaching basic language, but it explains the history behind common "slang" mandarin, if you will, so that a westerner can understand. Because the language is more than just symbols and tones, you get what I'm saying? It is great for conversational use I think. Also, that online Livemocha is free and better than anything else you can buy I think, unless you take a live course, this is the second best things for conversational practice and learning. dnoblett
If you are using Pimsleur to learn Chinese also, I came across a vendor on Ebay who developed a chart to help learn the nearly 700 characters and phrases covered in the 3 part Pimsleur system. http://myworld.ebay.com/cycloner1/ Link to comment

griz326
Thank you for the information on the every changing market for teaching English speakers to speak Chinese. I am looking for information on how to teach Chinese speakers to speak English. Link to comment
dnoblett
A few months ago I bough my Yu a very powerful pocket translator, it has a lot of ESL lessons from very basic to very advanced, it included DVDs full of lessons that can be installed on SD cards. The device is the Besta CD-627 or in Hong Kong the 9900 Mini. http://www.bestausa.com/dictionary/besta_cd_627/ This unit can be taken anywhere and used at any time that an unknown word or phrase needs translation, it speaks all words, and uses many input methods including writing Chinese characters on it's screen, or pinyin. Simply THE BEST I have seen. A larger version of the unit is the CD-636 http://www.bestausa.com/dictionary/besta_cd_636/ These units are mostly for learning English, but can also be used to learn Chinese, these units are designed and marketed in HK, China, and Taiwan for learning English. As you can tell from the websites for Besta they are predominantly targeting Chinese. http://www.bestausa.com/http://www.besta.com.hk/http://www.besta.com.tw/http://www.besta.com.tw/about/default.asp They can also be used as MP3 players, and can play AVI and Flash Video. Sebastian
Hey Griz - I just found out my local library has Pimsleur audiobooks on mp3 available for instant download/checkout. I'm transferring one to my mp3 player now, seeing if the DRM will work on my mp3 player. FUN. Link to comment
