China considers modifying one child policy

Even if they lift this policy, I don't think most would start having big families again, except in the countryside.

To have a boy in China means hope for a future with a man to take care of the family.

Rather simplistic statement, maybe true in rural China. More couples realize that an educated woman's earning potential can also secure their future.

Yes. My wife provides more towards the family than her brother.

same happened here... my wife, the youngest, took care of a dying, invalid mother for 10 years while the eldest brother avoided the 'hope' of his unfilfilled birthright...

In fact, I think the repercussions of this (ie: 10 years of your prime ages lost to time) contribute towards some of the inner struggles of my wife... in fact, I'm certain of it... and it's for that very reason more than any other that I'm willing to forgive and forget some issues...

Don't underestimate the life your SO lived in china... I'm sure there are things she doesn't even want to discuss... and there is no need to if you can just understand her.
