DHS check for AOS

Recommended Posts

According to the instructions, they just destroy your check and you can't see the information on the back?

Do we need to see any information on the back of the check?

Top of page 8 on the PDF file for instructions for I-485.

Notice to Those Making Payment by Check. If you send usa check, it will be converted into an electronic funds transfer(EFT). This means we will copy your check and use the account information on it to electronically debit your account for the amount of the check. The debit from your account will usually take 24 hours, and will be shown on your regular account statement.

You will not receive your original check back. We will destroy your original check, but we will keep a copy of it. If the EFT cannot be processed for technical reasons, you authorize us to process the copy in place of your original check. If the EFT cannot be completed because of insufficient funds, we may try to make the transfer up to two times.

Apparently so. My bank does that with the mortgage payments.

Most of the time with an EFT transfer they have a reference number for the transaction, I'll bet it is the MSC number.

Some banks allow you to see it on line (electronic banking) and you can print out the canceled check (both front and back) as well.

At the bank you can request for the copy (both front and back) of the check. Even though they might not have the original check that you wrote they should have a scanned copy at the bank's computer.

They still have to have some sort of evidence that you wrote the check (signature) and the transfer of money was done because of it.

Dept of H.S. cashed my check this past week!

I got a copy of the check from the electronic picture my bank gives me in my online account.

To the left of the cashed left it shows

**9digit bank routing #

Date they cashed my check

# that begins with 631. I'm guessing the DHS bank account #

followed by some more gibberish looking numbers.

A couple of stores do that around here, guess they can process the money faster. They scan the check, then give the check back to you to tear up. The online statement just shows the name of the store and amount and date, no check number at all.
