From China to USA - and the Great Firewall of China!

Recommended Posts

It seems my SO cant access the http://wowpicture.com/fromchinatousa_bbs/ website (currently in mainland china) Is their any way around this great firewall? Its getting on my nerves! :D :victory:

If I'm not mistaken, I believe the woman who runs the site is a former CFL member. They don't just let anyone in and each applicant is screened, as they don't want it to end up becoming like 001, if you know what that is or is like.

Anyway, now that you're here, Don can put give your better information and put in a good word to give her a free pass.

She should be able to access it even if she isn't a member yet unless it is being filtered out by the big red firewall. If that's the case she could probably still get to it by a proxy server. Some of the techies here could explain that better than me.

When you don't want Don (or any other web site you visit) to know who you are, use a proxy server.

A list of proxy servers is available at Public Proxy Servers.

All you need to do is click on (in your web browser) 'Tools', 'Options', 'Network', 'Settings' and enter the IP address and port # of the proxy server. This proxy server will relay messages from your web browser to the internet (and back).

It will appear to the web site that the connection is coming from the proxy. Your actual IP address will not be available to the web site.

As Randy says, proxy servers are often an answer. I travel all over the world to include some very very restrictive countries. The solution that has always worked, IF I can get a high bandwidth connection, is TOR.

TOR stand for The Onion Router. Go to the TOR website, download software for the PeeCee or Mac ... it's free, it works.

This software will allow you to access any site/service as long as the country you are in permits http connections ... and I don't know any countries that prohibit http.

I use XeroBank Browser when I need to circumvent detection. It use to be called TorPark. Here's a BBC article on TorPark.

I was surprised to find out that I could not access Wikipedia while in Guangzhou and Beijing.

Many sites such as that are blocked because even if they have no objectionable content at the time, it can easily be added by anyone. Wouldn't want anyone in China reading about Amnesty International, Tiananmen square, etc - or reading a 3rd party account of recent Chinese history, events, and international conflicts/disputes.
