Tracking progress at GZ

The best way is to call the State Dept visa people in the US. The number is 1.202.663.1225. Press 1-0-0 to skip through the menus and get to a person.

Have your GUZ number ready (or WAC if you don't have the GUZ as yet) along with the benficiary's name and birth date.

You want to ask if GZ has the electronic file and then do they have the hard copy file. Ask if name checks have been initiated and/or are complete. Check the many posts in this area to get a feel for progress and what else to ask.

Agree.......this was our best source of information. GUZ will give you a phone # to their 'Visa call center' which is a pay-service. We paid and called them, and never really got good, up to date information. Someone at the call center told us that GUZ updates their computer every monday, so the information is delayed.

DOS is free (except for your long distance charges) and can provide you more timely information (updated daily) as well as much more than the call center can provide.

Also, the email service at GUZ offers little help; so you're better off calling DOS. Here's a typical canned response via email from GUZ:

he U.S. Consulate General Guangzhou Immigrant Visa Section wishes to answer your questions and process your cases in the most timely manner possible. To help accomplish this goal, the Immigrant Visa Section asks that inquiries about the following items be directed to the U.S. Visa Information Center.

1.  Questions about whether a visa petition has arrived at the

Consulate

2.  Questions about whether a case is ready to be scheduled for an

interview (i.e. security namecheck results and required documents all

received)

3.  Questions about when an interview appointment wait times

4.  Questions about when an interview is currently scheduled

The U.S. Visa Information Center will be able to provide immediate answers

to some of your questions while allowing the Immigrant Visa section to

devote more resources to the processing of pending cases, benefiting both

petitioners and applicants alike. The U.S. Visa Information Center currently

can assist callers in Mandarin, Cantonese, Taishanese, and English.

Please call the U.S. Visa Information Center at 4008-872-333 within China or 86-21-3881-4611 from other countries, from 7 A.M. to 7 P.M. (China Time) Monday - Friday and 8 A.M. to 5 P.M. Saturday. Be prepared to provide the primary applicant name in pin yin and case number. There is a charge to access the Visa Information Center. Prices are 54 RMB for 12 minutes or 36 RMB for 8 minutes. The Visa Information Center charge may be paid at any CITIC Bank office or on the Internet at

https://www.usavisainformation.com.cn/eng/index.aspx. Once the charge is paid, you will be given a PIN number that must be given to the Visa

Information Center when you call to verify the payment.

To respond to this email, use only the web form at

www.usembassy-china.org.cn/guangzhou/iv/email.html. E-mails sent via "reply" will not be received.
