Tourist visa

An acquaintance of my wife is a naturalized citizen. She wants her parents to come over here for a visit from China. What kind of documents will be needed in order for this older Chinese couple (around age 70) to obtain tourist visas? Specifically, the woman was asking me if she will need to show certain financial documents.
