I apologize if this has been covered 100 times already ... if someone could give me an answer or a link, I would appreciate it.

My wife came in on a CR-1 and now I don't know what to do. How do I get her authorized to work?

Fuggetaboutit. She's already work authorized. A CR-1 is an immigrant visa, and she either has the I-551 stamp in her passport or has already received her green card. That's all she needs.

If you check the visa stamp in her passport, you should see a line typed, serves as a temporary I-551. My wife's permanent resident card "green card" came in the mail about two weeks after she arrived.

How about a Social Security number? What will it be necessary for, and what should I take when we go to apply?

The Social Security Card could be helpful if she seeks employment, wants to open a bank account, obtain credit, get a driver's license, file taxes with the IRS or buy insurance.

 

We took her passport, birth certificate and green card to the Social Security Office. If you don't have the green card yet, I think the CR1 visa stamp will suffice.
