Installing Chinese XP question

Recommended Posts

I spent the last day and half attempting to change a old computer to a completely chinese based computer. I have two versions of Chinese XP; a SP4 bought while in GUZ (but has a corrupt file so will not install) and a SP1 version.

First I formatted the hard drive; then installed Chinese XP.. and other chinese software, etc. What if ran into was that there was no iexplore.exe setup nor any internet connectivity. No IE icon, no nothing concerning connecting to the internet...

So, my SO talked to someone in china who said to make sure the system works with an english version of "IE" prior to installing the Chinese XP.

Starting over, I installed Win XP SP2 and got the internet portion working (for some reason the network card worked when the system was Win 98 but would not work with XP; switching to a wireless card got me connectivity).

But, now I try to install the Chinese XP, but windows says it will not allow the install since the version on my computer is newer than the version I have on the install disk !

Any thoughts ?

Can you install it dual-boot? Or install IE separately after the Chinese XP installation?

The dual boot, of course, would not install IE to the Chinese XP.

Check the Chinese XP CD to see if there's not an IE installation on it. If not, check Microsoft's web site.

When you do a fresh install of windows XP there is never an IE icon on the desktop by default. You have to right click on the desktop, choose properties, click the desktop tab, press the customize desktop button, put a check in the box next to internet explorer, then click apply.

It is simply not possible for windows XP to not have internet explorer, it is essential to and integrated with the OS.

Additionally, there is no such thing as XP SP4... sounds like some bootleg stuff to me :P

As for upgrading from the English SP2 version to the Chinese that is only SP1, can't be done, you're going to have to wipe it and start over.

If you are having difficulty getting Chinese XP to work though, You CAN get nearly 100% bilingual use out of the english windows XP. The only thing you'll be stuck with is the english start menu, error messages, etc. But you can install Chinese input/display, and non-unicode support. Install the Chinese versions of office, acrobat, firefox, etc, and except for an occasional error message, and the bottom left saying "start" you'll pretty much be set.

seems I now discovered all this by trial and error... :(

I could not setup a dual boot since the computer is fairly old and the original hard drive is only 3 GB. (Fogging out again... I did not buy a second hard disk to try this)...

In typical fashion, after two days of working on this, my SO said, "forget chinese, I must learn english"...

My only problem at this point is that the internet connection seems to drop on use. At first, the card I first used always had "limited or no internet connection"... and I could never get it to setup. So if switched that out with a wireless. That setup fine and worked from the get go...

But once on the net, it would stop a connection. If I did "ipconfig/release" ; "ipconfig/renew" , I would sometimes get various errors, usually cannot find DHCP server... and only a reboot would get it to reconnect [till it failed again].

Last issue was trying to get a version of 'wu bi' to work on a Win XP (non-chinese)... Guess I'll see what today brings...

But I will pursue the 'bilingual' approach.. I've seen threads already on it. THANKS

Just an update on updating the computer... the network card would not work, neither would the wireless that works in another machine.. I purchased a cheap generic wireless card which worked from the start  Reminded me of the days of getting a modem working...

I re-installed all my chinese programs after following closely Jasons writeup and all the chinese programs appear to work as we want... uh, with chinese :P

The big winner of the day was that "wu bi" input method works ! I thought we'd never get this working on Win XP.. but she's typing blazing fast now !! :D
