does anyone know what the stars mean?

Does anyone know what the stars on a USA b2 visa, issued in China, mean?

 

We noticed that my darling's parents are slightly different (besides their names) in that one has one star, and the other has two.

 

The one with two is currently employed and the one with one is currently retired. We think that this may be it, but again, we still do not even know what it means.
