My SO doesn't know ANYTHING about the visa process... much less like using a computer. I think she's too concerned about learning english... Link to comment
Robert S.
Paul, I hear you. What she must learn is one must be very patient with the US Govt. She won't be able to get her SSN until she has got her EAD first. Won't be able to file AOS until has got fingerprinting done. Et cetera, et cetera, et cetera. Like the old saying, if you can't baffle 'em with bullshit, resort to the law. Link to comment
LeeFisher3
Paul, You are getting a K-1 so the SSN is available for her with EAD, I'd suggest waiting a few weeks until they get her in the computer otherwise a manual search is done which I understand can take months. Take a look in Links and Resources at SSA Policies on K-1 SSN, What SSA Says About It. Once you are married and have the Certified Marriage Certificate you can file for AOS. You should also decide at this time if you are interested in EAD and AP, as I understand it the K-1 EAD runs out at 90 days after entry. The process will talk time and you must explain to her you will do all that is possible and then work the process as best as possible. Other than that you should both start trying to enjoy life together and let things run there course. Link to comment
warpedbored
SSN is immediately available for K-1 once she enters the country regardless of whether you have married yet or not. No EAD is required . If she wants to take your last name however it only makes sense to wait until after you are married then she can apply for the SSN in her married name. It ususally takes a week or two after entering the country for it to available to the SSA's database so the time frame to get a SSN for a K-1 is anywhere between 14 and 70 days after entering the country. BuffaloPaul
I'm not worried about all the logistics of EAD, SSN, etc. My post was really to highlight the insecurity that she can't lead a "normal" life until she has her green card. Link to comment

I seem to hear this alot from people who have been to that board. My SO has no clue about them.. and it seems all the better. Out of sight, out of mind. Link to comment
Guest Gene
Paul it is just that way while she is in China Once she gets here she will relax No pressure to get any of those documents You'll see it will be completely different "Trust me, I am From the Government I am here to Help you" Link to comment

I truly believe she will have adjustment issues to this culture and way of life.. but a piece of paper or a process step is not her concern towards a 'normal life'. But I can appreciate that some are focused to this.. and may have some ambitions towards working quickly as well... Link to comment
Guest Gene
I think you will be successful with that concept only if you manage to keep her away from other chinese women Good Luck Link to comment

Having said that, we've been particularly lucky. We filed the I-485 at the end of April, 2005. Fingerprint date was early July. AOS interview just happened a few days ago 8/05! Less than 4 months total! Our interview was at the Buffalo, NY office and I think they are much less busy than some of the other cities. There were only a few other people waiting there. The interview was very smooth, she only asked how we met and looked at some photos. Now that we have the temporary stamp in her passport we're off to DMV for her learner's permit!144251[/snapback] Link to comment
