  1. I found this software by accident. In itself, the Pleco products for iPhone are really a great resource. However I found the $15 add-on OCR too good to pass up.

Just point your iPhone camera at a Chinese character or line of characters and it will translate in real time. Won't work so well if it's handwriting or fancy text, but if your trying to interpret labels on buttons on your latest Chinese appliance, this is real useful.

    Check it out.

  2. Your right they do, but it's the record labels and movie studios trying to protect their profit center. If people can download a movie or latest album off the net, then they won't be buying it from legitimate sources. The torrent software is bad in one way, you download the stuff, and because it works as distributed network, it automatically sets your computer up a server too. So not only are you downloading the stuff for personal use, your also distributing it. That looks really bad when it comes time to prosecute the ignorant torrent user for distributing copy-write materials.

I'd hope the FBI has better things to do than sniff out people downloading entertainment. As far as other computers being connected, it is in a very limited fashion and the risk of becoming infected is no more than visiting a popular web page. That's why one should use personal protection.

  3. I don't use torrents, unless as a last resort. I use the usenet, much safer from a virus perspective and from a problem standpoint. When you download via a torrent, you are basically downloading from many different internet users. You have no idea whom those users are, and depending what your downloading.

If you just happen to be downloading the latest song or movie, and one of those torrent computers just happens to be owned by the FBI, they now have your IP address and know what your downloading.

Usenet is much faster and safer, although it's not usually free to access it. Since I can sleep at night without worry, I think it's money well spent.

  4. I found it, and with English subtitles. I'll watch it this weekend. I found it under the title "Aftershocks"

I doubt you will find it anywhere right now....is a new release movie in china that is filling theaters everywhere...even lining up for 2:00AM showings...just was a stroke of luck for the ones that got to see it online prior to its removal.....but who knows, am sure someone will copy and post it again eventually....is the china way to share the best movies!....not exactly sure of the name of the movie...is called "Aftershock" or Tangshan Earthquake-Aftershock....here it is in chinese...ÌÆɽ´óµØÕð.....hope this helps.

  5. I ended up seeking the Yelp directory and found an excellent Japanese place. A bit on the pricy side, but well worth it if you want to treat yourself.

Have fun in Irvine--- (I'm a UC Irvine Alum---grad school) --but of no immediate help, since its been more than 30 years.. Suggest nearby Costa Mesa, and Santa Ana are your best prospects ---but HEY ~ if you do find a great place, please let us know! (may finally get back down there myself....)

  6. Foxconn makes other things besides the iphone. I wonder why Apple is the only company that publicly has stated they would help subsidize a pay raise for foxconn employees.

Among other things, Foxconn produces the Mac mini, the iPod, the iPad, and the iPhone for Apple Inc.; Intel-branded motherboards for Intel Corp.; various orders for American computer manufacturers Dell and Hewlett-Packard; motherboards for UK computer manufacturer Zoostorm; the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 for Sony; the Wii for Nintendo; the Xbox 360 for Microsoft, cell phones for Motorola, the Amazon Kindle, and Cisco equipment.

    In other news:

Foxconn said on Sunday production line workers would be able to earn 2,000 yuan a month if they pass a three-month performance review.

The latest hike, to take effect as early as October 1, comes on top of a 30 percent across the board rise in the cash part of wages announced last week and means wages will be more than double since employee suicides became a major issue last month. Before last week's rise, workers earned 900 yuan a month.

Foxconn is the iPhone maker in Shenzhen, famous for its rash of suicides. Guess Jobs is trying to bribe his slaves not to kill themselves.

Wasn't Phil Knight and Nike raked over the coals for underpaying his foreign workers? And this company was only paying 900 RMB per month? In Shenzhen???

Everyone - run out and buy an iPhone.

  7. Watched an interesting show about interpretations of ancient cultures and how some believe some figures from different cultures were thought to be gods and such. One such person was Huang-Di, also known as the Yellow Emperor.

    Huang-di info

They described in the show that people of those times didn't know how to articulate words like spaceship, and such, so they used words like Bird or Dragon. Legend has it that Huang-Di was thought to come from a Flying "Dragon" and after his 100 year rule, a flying dragon came from the heavens and took him away"

They imply that Huang-di was actually of alien origin.

    Somewhat interesting theory.

  8. Yes, I'm all about protecting myself and my assets if it goes that way. A good real estate lawyer and CPA in case there are any tax implications.

Tim, if you do a short sale, make damn sure you get a letter from the lender stating that you have no further financial obligation for this loan. Have your attorney look over the letter before you accept it and go through with the short sale. If you do not have a release from the lender, the lender can come back later and sue you for the loss and you will be on the hook for it. Banks/Mortgage Companies are doing this left and right now. Any borrower that did not request a release is getting sued.

  9. I'm trying to weigh my future options and decide a best course of action for my situation. Right now I've got a job and great credit. The problem is due to a divorce, and taking a 2nd mortgage, and the bubble collapse, there is little to no equity in my home.

A large chunk of my income goes to the mortgage and property tax. It does not leave me with a lot of $$ for beginning a new marriage and the long immigration process.

I'm going to try to sell my home and get into something more affordable. I would expect this to go to short sale, but from what I read, the larger banks have no financial incentive to accept short sales because it's more profitable to foreclose. In any case, I've also looked at the strategic default option, and I could consider this route. If I went that route, and my credit got trashed, could I expect this to effect the K1 or K3 visa process?

    Please advise.

  10. Thanks for the links Roger.

  11. Yes, your right. I told her very much the same, that this does not effect us. Thanks for the input.

I don't think it will have much of an effect on your relationship, but what she probably needs most is your support and reassurance. As long as she knows that you still love her no matter what and that you don't "look down" her because of what happened, I am sure things will be ok. She probably has a lot of emotions about it, though, so as long as you are understanding of how she might act differently during this tough time, your relationship will probably come out stronger as you get through it together.
