  1. My first trip to China left me thinking of living there. Second trip left me a bit less enamored. Third trip, I couldn't wait to leave. Forth trip was to get Xiahong to GZ for her visa and get the hell outa Dodge.

Two weeks is about all I can stand. I hate the food, the smells, the noise, the mass congestion, people pushing their way into an elevator car that is already overfull; etc. If I was forced to live in China, I'd shoot myself within a month.

Oh, Xiahong has been here for 3 1/2 years and has no desire to go back even for a visit.

My thought are the same. I don't think I can live in China. If I do, it would be somewhere nice and small but the weather is very hot and humid everywhere. I would much prefer Sweden.

  2. In light of the I864 thread at the GVD section, (A shocker to many) I did a little research on the net. These are only 2 of the many articles that I found. Do you think there is a bias against men in the US? if yes, why?

Yes there is a bias against men. There was a law that was passed during Clinton's time that would allow the Police to throw any of us men in jail if your woman or any other woman called 911 and said you hit her. It doesn't matter if it is true or not. They will not even bother to investigate. Jail first. There is no punishment for the women if they found it to be untrue. Once you start paying child support and then found out that the child is not yours, you still have to continue to pay. The list is huge as far as bias against men. I truely believe that the system in US is broken concerning men's right. Because there is no such thing as men's right.

  3. When we were in Guilin, a taxi driver kind of latched on to us - took us to the hotel, took us to the CITS office to sign up for tours, was there waiting for us in the morning, and even after 3 or 4 hours at the animal park. He even had 2 or 3 meals with us. He told us that the government would pay him to give free rides to foreigners. We found out later that he gets a 20% kickback from CITS for bringing us there. No big deal, since the price we paid was the same, and we got quite a few free cab rides.

Then, in Beihai, a cab driver offered to take us to a restaurant for free (not the restaurant, the cab). She even came in and was helping Jiaying pick out the fish:

When Jiaying found out the prices they were charging, she said "No, thanks" and we went somewhere else that didn't give a kickback. Moral of the story: Make sure you're not paying a higher price for a "free" cab ride.

I had similar experience throughout China. In Hangzhou, the cab driver was willing to drive us to any place we want given if we stop by every place that he gets kickback. Finally, we said enough is enough and would go to the super expensive pearl place that he offered to take us, he decided that he no long have time to show us around. I would rather just pay the driver out right and go to places I want to go instead of letting them drag me all over the places that they can rip you off.

  4. SO's interview was on October 16 and she passed without any problem. They asked her a few questions but I don't remember what she said now. She said that VO was surprised at the number of times I visited her. NINE including the interview in the last 2.5 yrs. Oh yeah one of the question was "why did I went to Taiwan?". She just said that I went for business trip.

We both just got back from Shanghai today and she is just exhausted and is now taking a very long nap.

  5. Hi donahso, I have sent e-mail to both hotel owner twice this week and have yet to hear a response. The first e-mail was sent Monday, second was sent yesterday. I read so much good things about both of them here but my personal experience so far has been disapointing. If they don't have rooms available then they can just e-mail to let me know. Not one response from both of them.

There are two pinned topics in this forum. One is Mr. Xie and the other Mrs. Yang. Those are the hotel owners and they have contact info listed there.

Seems to me they are not very responsive either. I called Angie's place and booked the place but asked them to call my SO and they never did. I also PM'd them a few times but no response. Well, my SO decided to call Yang's place and booked it over the phone. I think your best bet is to call them or have your SO call to book the place.

  6. We spent all of last week with the Yang's. Very highly recommended. Both went out of their way to help us, came to visit at odd hours to see if we needed any assistance, and offered advice during the first gloomy days after the blue slip last Thursday.

    They are: :ok:

I hope I will never see a blue slip :D Yeah SO wanted to stay in Mr. Yang but I blew it and booked at Mr. Xie instead.

  7. Check out White Swan on Virtual Tourist. Someone was not happy from the review I read.

We have booked with the Yang's. Very nice people. The rate was 200 RMB up to Oct.13 for one bed, kitchen, and living room. From Oct. 14-31 350 RMB (during Trade Period ). We planned a week. Even at 350 RMB, excelent deal! SO said so. :o

I booked my stay at Angela and mr. Xie. I didn't know if that was different than Mr. Yang's until now. Anyway, the review here seems to be that Angela's place and Mr. Yang's place are both very nice and that they both are very helpful. I'm just hoping everything would go smoothly.

  8. For those of you that are going to GZ in Oct. 15-30, have you found any suitable hotel? Someone here recommend White Swan but their price is 5 times the normal price for this period? Any recommendation for any hotel near the GZ office that is reasonable? I'm just wonder if anyone of you that will be in GZ found anything else. Thanks.

Almost all the hotels which cater to the busines travalers will be significantly higher in price due to the fair whic is taking place in Oct in GZ. You're going to have to get ready for "non-reasonable" prices no matter where you go.

Yeah I think you are right. I have decided to just go ahead and book the place that was listed on this site in the "GZ Info". I don't want to take a chance to wait too long. Even they have higer price but reasonaby higher only and not 5 times higher. Although the post said $200 RMB for this period, I just called them and they said $250 RMB. That's okay as it is still reasonable unlike White Swan which is almost $3800 RMB per night from it's usual price of $800 RMB.

  10. Hi Everyone,

What's the best place to stay that is near the interview location and is convenient? I'm just looking for a place that is decent and reasonable price. Maybe around 400-700RMB.

    Thanks for your help.

I'm not sure of the dates for the October trade fair in Guangzhou but it will be good to nail down your reservation now. They all fill up and at 3-4 times the regular price. The information on two hotels in the new Consulate building is in the GUZ Info forum.

I understand the White Swan Hotel is good but the Visa and American Citizen sections of the Consulate have moved. One of the hospitals for the medical in on Shamian Island but not the interview.

Pushbrk, we will do the medical exam in as well as pay the visa fee in Shangai. We don't want to wait for last minute. I'll check out the Swan Hotel. I've done searching and did found other hotel recommended here as well. I just want a place that is close, convenient, clean, and comfortable.

    Thanks for all your help.

  11. the chinese girl does not use our normal way of thinking...

    everything is shown by action....

she might throw you a curve ball just to see how you react to it.

    trust her no matter what....

isnt that whats its all about anyway.

throw all your heart into it.....

she'll see your sincerity and eat it up. :)

dont forget what she is giving up,

    everything.

I'll give up everything to go to China and have someone take care of me too :P .

every story is different, my girl has a great family that loves her very much....

many good friends, an incredible job with great pay

....and the security of being someplace she knows and is comfortable with....

    not the unknown

its very easy to say you'd give up this or that for someone to take care of you.

Well then your situation is an exception and not the norm. I admit that I would have to take care of my SO for a long long time before she can be self sufficient.

  13. Hi everyone,

My SO finally received P4 last week. There was a question on the P4 for proof for engagement. I'm not sure what we need to provide. I haven't bought her an engagement ring or anything. I proposed to her in person and she just said yes. We didn't do anything special or have anything for proof. What did everyone provided? What should I provide?

    Thanks.

That would be your letter of intent to marry, she has one in the P-4 that she will sign at the Consualte.

Thanks LeeFisher3. SO confirm that there is a letter inside as you said. ;)

  15. I would do a cost of living comparison between where you live and Hampton. It if is about the same and that your salary will be double, I would take the job given if the company look stable. Got to follow the money. Also higher title could open up more opportunities in the future. I am never loyal to a state or company. I am only loyal to my country.

  16. IF a VO asks you .. (as a man)... why do you like your fiance/wife?  What would you answer?

Yesterday someone is practicing questions with Lin .. and said ..There are always US men here with Chinese woman .. you are different. Then they ask .. why do you like her?  Lin replied  .. I don't know .. why do you like your girlfriend?  The guy also says   I don't know ....

At first I was a little worried or concerned .. hmmmmmmmmm why doesn't he know why he likes me .. I know why I like him.  Then I begin asking men around me why they like their wife .. unnanamous (sorry can't spell) answer .. I don't know ........

Is this just a Chinese man thing .. or a Man thing?

    239101[/snapback]

I think it's a guy thing. My SO asked me and I didn't know what to say. She wasn't happy about it.
