If you can get something certified, it carries much more weight. Whether or not it was the case, my SO and I expected them to be suspicious of whatever they sent. At Ying's "hukou" they just want written statement from her that she is single, they will confirm they have no record of marriage - then it is off to the notorial office to get all the translations and official stamps China thrives on bureaus, paper, stamps, etc. Collect what is needed - you will have no problem.
