Dafen Artist Colony in Shenzhen

Recommended Posts

Dafen Artist Colony in Shenzhen is China's largest artist's village. It was our SHORTEST trip at only four subway stops from the hotel, but we had a train to catch that afternoon at 3.

There were several artists at work.

Maybe next time we go we'll know where to explore and maybe can actually BUY something. As it was, I contented myself with wandering through the village and taking a few pictures. We stopped by on our last day in Shenzhen, and didn't know what to expect. A very pleasant surprise, indeed.

The world’s fake Van Goghs and Basquiats come from this village
Dafen is a small suburb in the southern Chinese city ol Shenzhen. In its heyday, it produced 60% of the world's oil paintings, churning out copies of the Mona Lisa and The Starry Night you see in hotel lobbies and restaurants. But after decades of making another person's work, Dafen's painters are now trying to pave their own way as artists in their own rights. Here's a peek into the town also known as China's art copy capital.
