Birding.

Recommended Posts

Since retireing it has given us a chance to slow down and take in some sights. Feeding the birds has really opened our eyes to the multitude of locals and the migratory that come through. We keep a log book of arrivals and departures and going back it appears fairly predictable. Here is a Scarlet Tananger that hung around all day. Next day was nowhere to be seen again. Was so tame we could walk up to him within 10 feet. I don't think he ever saw a human before the way he acted.

Found a useful app for iphone or ipad that identifies birds, it makes the guess that it is a Scarlet Tanager...

Great link, thanks! I have a hard time with some of the birds of prey, espically the juveniles, and the really small migrating wrens too. The books are only as good as their picture and online is usually too much of a color difference depending on location or state. That link is super, can't thank you enough.

It's a sweet app, I have a good friend who lives in mountain view who sends me all sorts of pictures of flowers and birds, I do a quick ID of the pictures.

My flower ID app is from Microsoft and ironically the interface is in Chinese.

Not only does the app work so easily, the IDs it gave me were spot on. And best of all were the included ID pictures, crystal clear and dead ringers to mine (only about 10x better though, haha.).Can recommend the app 100%. You made my day.

I like the bird song feature in the app, can listen to the app and know what the various bird sound like.

Get a basic SLR camera, there is a big difference between a cell camera and an SLR with its APS sized image sensor.

A friend in Richardson TX has been snapping bird pics mostly in his backyard. Here are some he took of Blue Jays and Cardinals

Why be mean to animals? They treat you better then most people.

Both animals and "being mean" are in no way being implied or even being referenced to here.

Feeding and attracting wild birds to ones property is a wonderful way to both see and support nature. Being able to see and perhaps even capture the moment with a picture is simply a bonus, giving one an opportunity to share the moment with others.

Saw a rare for my area bird today. After Getting the ID and name I somehow deleted it. Still trying to get used to this new (for me) technology. The white striped head is what really caught my attention. Once again, so tame walked to within 10 feet and just watched him eat off the feeder. So I copied the picture off the app seeing I lost the original after I ID'd him. I think he's pretty cool looking, as we never saw this one before today. Guess he is on his way to far Northern Canada to breed, but even in migration this species should not be this far down South. Yesterday's big all day North wind must have pushed him on down.

Name is a White-Crowned Sparrow.

I am a birder too but don't tell anybody. I think birds are really fascinating creatures. I used to call cardinals in to feed at my old home in Florida. Miss that. The fight with the bluejays as to who fed in order was just a hoot. A study in animal psychology. Great stress reliever.
