Its been a long time coming and its a relief to get this process going. Here's my questions about the process:

 

On a lot of the checklists it doesn't mention the marriage certificate itself needs to be brought to the application. I didn't bring it foolishly and he asked if I had it. He said I may need to add it later if asked. Is this normal? I had the white book and thought that was enough.

 

Secondly they took and kept my wife's passport. Is this normal? I thought it was quite odd.

They may ask to see the red book marriage certificate.

 

But there is no reason why they would keep the passport - until they are ready to put a visa in it.

About 15 minutes after leaving, they literally called me and told me to come back to pick it up, as they forgot to return it to me. Oh well.

Three days later, and we got an EMS from the consulate asking for a copy of our original marriage certificate. They just a copy, no need to turn in the originals, is that correct?

Correct - be sure to have the original at the interview.
