procedure to get married in China

Recommended Posts

Hi,

What are the procedure and documentation requirement for a US citizen to marry a Chinese national in China, can someone advise?

I looked it up on some websites already. It seems like I need to have a certificate of marriageability, which can be issued by US consulate in China, is that true?

Some websites claim that I also need a Chinese residency permit, which I do not have. I will be in China under a tourist visa, will that be fine?

Do I need to provide any documents from the State side?

Thanks!

I got a document from my county in the US indicating they had no records indicating I was currently married. I made an appointment at the US Embassy in Beijing, showed them the county document and they provided me with notarized document indicating I was unmarried. We took the embassy document to the marriage registration office for foreigners in Shenyang where the document was accepted and we were then married. Pretty simple really.

The info on this link is regarding obtaining single certificate from the Chinese Consulate here in the States. I was told that the US consulate in China can provide the same service, as deg said. I prefer to simply getting the certificate from the US consulate, but unsure whether I need to get a county document first.

Also, do I need a Chinese residency permit (i.e., I have to either live or work in China) in order to get married in China? Can I simply be a tourist to get married in China?

The other question, some website indicate that I need a birth certificate as well. Where do I get the birth certificate from? I am a naturalized US citizen, was actually born in China. So I don't have a birth certificate from US.

Your birth certificate comes from your place of birth - see . . . by golly, you hit all three of them right in a row! Under Links for Visa Information

"the US consulate in China can provide the same service" - you've already read the first post about Singles Certificates

Im not sure I even needed the county certificate, but I did show it to them. For the most part it was simply declaring to the embassy official that I am not currently married. You definitely do not need to reside or work in China to get married there.

The chinese consulates in the states do not issue these certificates, they will authenticate one that you get from your state's Department Of State office.

Most find the stateside process of getting this more time consuming and harder to do than simply visiting a US Consulate location in China and getting this document there.
