White House Official, in Reversal, Says Green Card Holders Won’t Be Barred

A top White House official appeared to reverse a key part of President Trump’s immigration order on Sunday, saying that people from the affected countries who hold green cards will not be prevented from returning to the United States.
But the official, Reince Priebus, the White House chief of staff, also said that border agents had “discretionary authority” to detain and question suspicious travelers from certain countries. That statement seemed to add to the uncertainty over how the executive order will be interpreted and enforced in the days ahead.

. . .

Mr. Priebus said that travelers from the seven countries — Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen — would be “subjected, temporarily, with more questioning, until a better system is put in place.”

The executive order seems to be over-reaching in other ways - in the NY Times

President Trump’s Immigration Order, Annotated

It defines what non-U.S. citizens should believe

The United States cannot, and should not, admit those who do not support the Constitution, or those who would place violent ideologies over American law.

“There is no statutory requirement that noncitizens entering the United States support the Constitution,” said Peter J. Spiro, a law professor at Temple University. “The executive order seems to suggest that even temporary visitors like tourists and students should support the U.S. Constitution, which doesn’t make a lot of sense.”

My amateur opinion is that: 1) the situation is ongoing and changing - if only due to court stays, and 2) China was never one of the departure countries triggering denial of entry.

Am I missing something?

But, yes, pretty scary to think that a couple or even a family could be separated by an impromptu and sketchy EO.

Although this is not geared toward Chinese immigrants, it really tugs on your emotional strings.

My wife is soon returning to China for 3 months to take care of some family business. I can only imagine the feelings of those who may have had family get caught up in this mess.

It's pretty alarming how quickky things can change on the whim of the man in office.

My wife is in China now, due back in a week. Can't come soon enough.

Also note that the executive order cancels the Visa Interview Waiver Program, which I used once to extend my wife's visitor visa without having to wait in that awful line outside the US visa processing center in Shanghai.

We have one Chinese member who came back just in the last day or two, apparently without incident

Here's an article on the Visa Interview Waiver Program - https://qz.com/895149/trump-is-suspending-the-visa-interview-waiver-program/

from the order - CNN provided the full text at http://www.cnn.com/2017/01/28/politics/text-of-trump-executive-order-nation-ban-refugees/

Sec. 8. Visa Interview Security. (a) The Secretary of State shall immediately suspend the Visa Interview Waiver Program and ensure compliance with section 222 of the INA, 8 U.S.C. 1222, which requires that all individuals seeking a nonimmigrant visa undergo an in-person interview, subject to specific statutory exceptions.

The DHS mentions the Interview Waver Program under The Federal Government

Federal Government

As part of a broader set of government actions, the Secretary of State will review all nonimmigrant visa reciprocity agreements to ensure that they are, with respect to each visa classification, truly reciprocal.

The Department of State will restrict the Visa Interview Waiver Program and require additional nonimmigrant visa applicants to undergo an in-person interview.

Or, it's getting worse. From the Washington Post:

"A second draft order under consideration calls for a substantial shake up in the system through which the United States administers immigrant and nonimmigrant visas overall, with the aim of tightly controlling who enters the country, and who can enter the workforce, and to reduce the social services burden on U.S. taxpayers.

The drafts are circulating among administration officials, and it is unclear whether President Trump has decided to move forward with them or when he might sign them if he does decide to put them in place. The White House would not confirm or deny the authenticity of the orders, and White House officials did not respond to requests for comment about the drafts on Monday and Tuesday."

and

"If enacted, the executive orders would appear to significantly restrict all types of immigration and foreign travel to the United States, expanding bars on entry to the country that Trump ordered last week with his temporary ban on refugees and people from seven majority Muslim countries."

Looks like a PR stunt getting out of hand.

We have I131s pending for the sisters.

When the "Fake News" comment was directed at the CIA, I voiced my concerns to my State's senators and my Rep. I advised them that I would support any "action" (removal from office) that they may need to take to ensure the security of the nation.

Thanks for the updates guys. Glad to hear that a member of the group recently arrived back in the US from China. My wife is visiting China in a few months too. Can't help but think about it, especially after our long journey to get here.
