Hi,

When I received my K-1 visa I was living in the UK. The Varicella (chickenpox) was not available. I obtained all other shots and this was included with my medical. Those were all taken when I entered the country. Do I need to get the shot before I submit my I-485?

Thanks

Liz

Yes, the Varicella vaccination is a required vaccination, but, more to the point, it's the I-693 which is required to be submitted with your I-485. If you have one which is already signed and is current (i.e., less than six months old), you may wish to submit it as is.

Otherwise, you will need to get a new one by visiting a Civil Surgeon in the U.S. The Civil Surgeon makes the final determination of the up-to-date requirements, and will most likely require that you get the vaccination before he will sign off on the I-693.

You can also CHOOSE to get the vaccination (probably a good idea if you haven't had one) - in which case you may wish to have it by a Civil Surgeon who can sign off on a new I-693 vaccination section.

My I693 was completed, I beleive, when I had my medical in the UK. This I assume was included in the documents that was handed in when I went through immigration. Of course everything was sealed so I'm not sure, but when I did the medical we went through all shots, which with the exception of the Varicella I had gotten from a local doctors. If I get the vaccination now I don't want to have to do the full I-693 again. Can I just get the vaccination and send in letter from local doc here?

Thanks

Liz

No, the letter will not carry any weight - but what you can do is to submit the I-693 you already have (in the sealed package). Again, it's the Civil Surgeon who makes the determination as to which vaccinations are required. In your case, that has already happened.

It's still possible that you could get an RFE for a new I-693 Vaccination record with the Varicella vaccination, but your choice is to get the shot NOW with a NEW I-693 Vaccination report, or wait to see if the USCIS REQUESTS one. If your surgeon has already signed off on the I-693 Vaccination report, my guess is that they will not.

Did you ever have the chicken pox when you were young? Sometimes the doctor asks this and notes it on the medical. Did you have a vaccination and medical record showing having had the chicken pox and provide this when having medical an vaccination record done, this may be noted on the medical and/or I-693.

If you plan on attending a college, they may want to see your vaccination record, when you got the shots, did you get a yellow international vaccination record book? My wife attended a college here in the states and they wanted to see the record, and had to get a titer test to check for immunity to chicken-pox, no need for the booster shots.
