What does the title represent? As near as I can figure, it's simply a Chinese phonetic representation of 'You May'. Is there a Chinese interpretation?

育美 = Yu Mei, which is pronounced the same as the English - You May

About the word Merican on the site

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=merican

1.

A word which means "American", but doesnt require you to put your burger and fries down to use the shift button in order to create a capital letter for the "A".

Many "Americans", use the word merican, when filling in forms as it saves valuable time and energy which could be more purposly used eating or drinking.

" we are mericans and we are proud "

Hi Dan, thanks for sharing our website link here!

msittig is right about 育 and 美.

美 also means "美丽" = beautiful, as to say Chinese women are beautiful and becoming more beautiful in 美国.

I'm surprised with all the Chinese characters flying around here.

Can't believe you all can speak and type Chinese! My husband will be embarrassed...

Is this correct? Or just old fashion?

LOL, I always find the characters to be fascinating.

My wife who is over in China visiting at the moment sent me this picture, I quickly replied back what it says, she got a kick out of that.

Knowing where she is and doing at the moment I knew the notation on the bus means Yangshuo <--> Guilin or 阳朔 <--> 桂林

Your Chinese must be scary good to your wife. No secrets in the Chinese channel any more. Bad news to wives !!

Able to Read the Chinese characters is quite an advanced stage to me. How do you memorize these characters?

Aren't they all look like mess code or weird painting?

Oh no nowhere that good, I tend to use deduction, My wife is visiting family in Guilin, and she planned to visit friends in Yangshuo not far from there, thus already knowing the bus had to be the one connecting to Yangshuo.

Also I tend to have Chinese language added to my iPhone and Computers so that I can generate characters.

I tend to like symbols, so Chinese character tend to be mostly symbols to me.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi everyone, I realize I haven't introduced myself :)

Here's me:

Born in Chengdu, grew up in China, have a 7 yr old daughter came to the US at age 5

Met & married an American with 14 & 16 year old daughters

First 18 months of marriage were long distance while working through the USCIS process

First two years in the US is quite a shock and full of challenges : scare of talking to Americans, scare of going to grocery store, no friend, feeling lost and low...

Now want to help other Chinese immigrant women who may be facing similar challenges

Started a non-profit organization staffed by volunteers -all Chinese women in the US

Would like to hear from people on CFL, how best You May can help.

thank you!!!!

A lot of guys I met in the military say 'Merican as a kind of joke to some of the foreign women when they asked, Where are you from? Instead of saying "I am an American" which is formal, they would shorten it to "I'Merican." The term if I recall came from a beer commercial and caught on. It is really just a colloquial saying.
