I've noticed a problem the past few days with the notifications icon at the top of the page. Used to be I could see the notifications inside when I clicked it, but not it appears empty. I looked at all the site settings but could not see a setting that is causing or could fix it.

Seems random, works for me, however a few days ago I would get the blank list. May have to do with bandwidth.

Not random or bandwidth related for me. It began a few days ago and appears empty every time I left-click it. I have plenty of bandwidth as I'm back in the US now. However, if you right-click the icon and open in a new window it will display the contents. It appears to be site-related.

Strange:

Click, it shows a refresh circle for a few seconds, and then pull-down pops down.

Using Chrome browser, on a very high bandwidth connection.

When hovering over the Notifications icon it now appears this way:

After left clicking once it appears this way for a few seconds:

Then, after a couple of seconds it stops spinning it appears like this:

Again, if I right-click it and select to open in a new window, then, I can see the contents. Otherwise it appears empty. The same happens in Chrome, IE, Firefox, and Nightly.

. . . and content distribution network. That is, IPB content downloads to your computer from different locations depending on your physical network address. As long as everything is working, it works - whenever something fails to download, it DOESN'T work. Seems to be that IPB has their work cut out for them there - that it basically suffers from a poor design, but I don't see anything about it on the Internet.

In my own case, I used to have similar problems with many aspects of Candle. Now with my new computer, it's like night and day, whether I'm connecting directly or over a VPN. I have no idea why that would be the case. I'm getting VERY good performance.

Today, the notifications link is working properly. Appears to be site related as I have not changed anything on this end.

What changes is the load between you and the site, IPB, and their CDN sites. Caching on your own computer may also affect functionality (several people, including myself, have reported issues which seemed to only affect them). It's no longer a matter of straight-line code which can function exactly the same way each time.

What changed for me was a new computer. Now I see none of these issues.

What's interesting to me is after quality inspecting hundreds if not more websites and webpages through the years I can honestly report that this type of issue is not best resolved by pointing at the messenger. While I may wish I were sometimes to be computer illiterate, I am far from it. I frequently purge my cache, make sure that the virus profiles are updated every day, and when I encounter a problem I try more than one web-browser to see whether it's browser related. I am pretty confident that this issue, while it may seem unique to me right now, is not something that is created by me or my machine only. I am only here to report what I see and what I see is it wasn't working for several days in China. Then, I traveled to the US and it still didn't work. Then, after I did nothing it suddenly works again. I've seen a lot of websites that have bugs, and it's usually the sites that lack the support staff to work 'em out.

The website is far from simple HTML pages, under the hood is a database server, and a lot of code that generates the pages on the fly, so any time you click a link a lot of processing goes on when generating the resulting page with a lot of additional processing happening after the page displays, the additional processing produces things like the notification pull-down, sometimes the secondary stuff like the notification pull down times out due to internet lag.

Sure, where there is a webpage, there is code. The difference between a good-code writer and a bad one is how many lines it takes to make a widget walk from point 'a' to point 'b' successfully. So, if there is a lot of subroutines and needless lines of riff-raff from the application that drives this site, it may become bogged down from all the guests and search engines gathering information for the Russian, Chinese, CIA and FBI. In short, I am quite confident that my computer is performing properly and can also report that the webpages I frequently visit that have been designed and coded by advanced professionals continue to perform reliably every day, all day. No need to take this personally that we differ in opinion as to the cause.

I pointed out what changed for ME, not what I think may be happening with you. I have no idea what the deal was with my old computer, except for hardware latencies which were bad enough to eventually cause it to crash.

Just now, though, I had an issue trying to enter a Reply. it finally worked after I hit Refresh.

And, no, we don't have a 'support staff' to work out bugs.

I know there is no support staff so for those of us who grew up with computers know that work-arounds and the only way to get by. It's okay though, I'm used to it. Just reporting a bug, that's all. My fix was to right-click the notifications icon and open in a new browser tab. No big problem. Just sayin.
