Steve and Qingqing
Ok, Ive read the old posts and still havent found the answer im looking for . We got married in Nevada 2 weeks ago and was told that they do not change her name to mine on the Marriage Certificate. We were told that we'd have to do that ourselves later..I was married before ( not in Nevada) and dont recall having that wifes name ever changed on some government document. She just took on my last name and that was it.. I know we can have my new wifes name changed legally on her SS card. My question is, she wants to go by her name and mine...so is all thats required is for her to file the AOS forms using the new last name and have her SS card changed as well or do we have to go before a judge and pay more money to have it legally changed? Isnt she automatically my last name now?...does it matter?..can she keep her last name if she wants to? I would think that wouldnt be the best option though.. She would like to go by her fist name, then last then my last name... Link to comment
LeeFisher3
The answers on name change are extremely vague and the information is even harder to find. Along with our marriage license was a duplicate copy that the judge signed and sealed. An information sheet accompanied this stating the purpose of this was to be used to change her name with Social Security and State ID. With the marriage certificate you go in and tell them you are submitting a name change and Social Security will do it based on the marriage license. The Drivers license office will do a check with Social Security for the name change. Somewhere in this process someone apparently waves a magic wand and says your name has been changed. In the US it is amazing that a legal name change can take place in this manner without some form of official document, but that's it. No special papers or anything. But the marriage certificate becomes part of her official identification in the furture where a birth certificate is required, because the name is different. Link to comment
