david_dawei
if one mails in their application, I assume they still want two forms of ID from the applicant.. so that certified copies would be sent in ... We went today in person.. got back everything we presented. Link to comment
LeeFisher3
Also if you mail it there is no telling what the person opening it would do, you could easily end up with your first denial having someone tell you what USCIS policy is in their mind. Link to comment
Dan R
I printed the SS5 from the net Tuesday. Filled it out and we went in Wednesday. Took about 25 minutes. 18 waiting for our number to be called. I marked the application for work. They didn't say what the card will indicate. Showed her passport, I-94 and Birth Cert. USCIS had posted her in the computer so no problem. The card comes from MD within two weeks. The receipt is all we need to do the Cali ID next week at DMV. Link to comment
Jason+Joanna
Dan, Did she get the EAD stamp in her passport ? Link to comment
Dan R
No she did not but the SSA policy manual states K-1 is eligible for work for the 90 days of visa. That policy memo is probably why the stamp stopped being given. I would guess someone at JFK made the decision to continue issuing because so many SS offices don't follow instruction. Remember the visa and I-94 with stamp are also only valid for 90 days then the AOS is needed with EAD to again have the right to work. http://policy.ssa.gov/poms.nsf/lnx/0100203500 Link to comment

BUT, after reading all these post it seems that there are 3, and better clarity about which one's we are talking about would greatly help the SSN discussions. Here are the 3 i think exist, others please reconfirm: 1) "VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION" 2) "NOT VALID FOR WORK" ... (or a similar phrase???) 3) "plain jane" card ... i.e. nothing on it. I know for FACT that (1) and (3) exist: I have a (3) and my wife has a (1). I have not seen the (2) variety so i am not exactly sure what it says. floating around in a lot of post out there are a lot of similar phrases to the ones above, and i think it really confuses all the discussions. personally, i think we should gather all the different "types" of SSNs and then pin them somewhere. only pin them once we are sure to have gathered all the "types" AND exactly what they are good for and what they need to be used with (EAD, temp EAD, "POE"-EAD, no EAD, etc...) what do you think??? or, has this been done? i guess the same should be done with EAD. a list of the "types" of EADs, when they are obtained, how they are obtained, etc. maybe??? david_dawei
I know this smell... it has FAQ aroma... my hope is to pull together AOS FAQ while I'm going through the process and having to research stuff anyway... So, if people will post everything and anything useful here concerning these issues, that would be great... Link to comment
